Of course we know that longer days and growing light, progressing toward spring planting, does not depend on traditions or rites. So why do we celebrate Yule?
Because of an ancient wisdom that supersedes textbook science. We understand the scientific operations of the solar system and the seasons. We also understand that we are not separate from nature, but are part of it. Whether we are conscious of it or not, our bodies, minds, and spirits keep time with the seasons – with the wheel that turns from Samhain to Yule. That and the pull of tradition that has been so deeply embedded in European culture for so long that it is also embedded in our DNA, prompt us to respond to the day.
If not magickally, then at least to note the change of season and spiritually turn the page.
